A brand new musical comedy about our 44th president, Barack Obama, will be opening February 27, 2025, at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, and if you need a good laugh, you know where to find one.
An early preview of the show, written, directed and composed by Eli Bauman, offered that talking politics does not have to take anything away from a first rate musical comedy. The cast delivered amazing vocal and comedic performances in the rehearsal room of the Douglas, previewing some powerhouse theater.
Summer Nicole Greer sings us into the story and introduces us to Barack Obama, played by T.J. Wilkins. Shanice sang the house down as Michelle Obama, and the show is narrated by Joe Biden, played by Larry Cedar.
Bauman offered “With what’s going on, [people can] take this opportunity to lose themselves in something that feels good, hopeful, honest. I think of our show as a night out where you are not just expected to sit quietly and politely and make sure to not like open up a bag of candy too loud, and ….hopefully leave with something that feels good and inspiring Maybe just laughing for a couple hours is good enough.”
The show is in previews from Sunday, Feb. 23 through Wednesday, Feb 26, and opening night is Thursday Feb. 27
Bauman hopes that “44” is the right show in the right place at the right time, and it feels like that’s exactly what it is.
