Dear Editor,
When I was 10 my dad pulled me out of my fourth-grade classroom unexpectedly and took me to game 4 of the 1959 World Series. He was not much of a sports fan, but he knew that I was. I have no idea where he got those tickets. I did not ask. This was the thrill of a lifetime for me.
I have been Dodgers fan through all the ups and downs since they came to LA in 1958.
But what the team did on Monday by deciding to follow tradition and accept Donald Trump’s invitation to visit the White House has me reconsidering.
Watching the players and ownership smile at Trump and shake his hand saddened me greatly. Trump 2.0 has hurt so many and continues to do so on as daily basis.
But is has taught me the difference between “taking a knee” and “bending a knee.”
In football a team that is winning a game “takes a knee” to run out the clock on the game.
What the Dodgers did by showing up at the White House and “bending a knee” is a winning team running out the clock on our democracy.
Jackie Robinson is most likely rolling over is his grave.
