The Culver City Unified School District Board of Education held a special meeting on March 4, 2025, to address budget cuts, including reductions in employees and the official closure of the Assistant Superintendent of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) position, which had been vacant since January 2024. Despite eliminating the DEI assistant superintendent role, the board reinforced that school leadership and counselors will continue to advance DEI efforts within CCUSD.
A total of 39 positions were cut across on-campus personnel and administrative staff as part of a $3.4 million personnel budget reduction.
Administrative staff faced a larger proportional cut, meaning that administrative responsibilities will now shift to counselors and teachers, adding to their workload.
Budget reductions also affected transportation, with field trip funding being reduced. As a result, schools will be encouraged to rely on their own staff for services that were previously contracted out.
Employees who were laid off will be placed on a 39-month rehire list, giving them priority for reemployment if their positions are reopened. They will receive official layoff notices on or before March 15, 2025, and their positions will be eliminated at the start of the 2025-26 school year, as outlined in 2024-25 Resolution No. 24.
During the public recognition period, a custodian supervisor affected by the layoffs spoke about his dedication to CCUSD, highlighting that he often worked at night and remained available at all hours to maintain district facilities. He also proposed cost-saving measures, such as reducing chemical usage, to help reduce budget.
Discussions about additional budget reductions and alternative funding sources will continue beyond the March 15 deadline.
