It’s that time of the year when the weather is high school sports teams’ toughest opponent. Cold weather and rain is a difficult situation to be beat when you are playing outdoor sports like baseball, softball, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse and when you are competing in track and field meets.
Despite the unpredictable weather most of the Culver City High School Spring teams are competing at a very competitive level as the seasons move into the second quarter. It Press time (March 12) the boys and girls track, and field teams are recording some of the best times in the state, the baseball team is 5-4, the girl’s lacrosse team is 2-3, the boy’s lacrosse team is 2-3 and the girls’ softball team is 1-7.
Right now, the track and field teams are the leaders of the pack. They are producing outstanding early season times even when some of their key runners are nursing injuries. “Right now, we just want to get healthy and keep improving,” said co-head coach Jahmal Wright in a telephone interview last Sunday. “We have some very talented athletes this year and we just want to get to the finish line at the of the season.”
Leading the group of many gifted Centaur track stars is senior Joelle Trepagnier. Since her freshman year she has been one of the top 200 and 400-meter runners in the nation. Last Saturday at the Redondo Nike Invitational she won the 400 meters in 55.35, which is currently the second fastest time in the state.
In the boy’s division Culver City has three runners who have run 10.80 are better in the 100 meters. Dominic Bastiste leads that group with a time of 10.63 which he ran at the Redondo Invitational. Duaine Mayrant recorded the third fastest time in the state at Redondo when he ran 47.66 in the 400 meters. The Centaurs also have two of the fastest relay teams in the state in the 4X100 and the 4X400.
The track and field teams will compete in the California Relays on Saturday at Long Beach Wilson high school and they will run and jump against Beverly Hills and North Torrance on Wednesday, March 19, at 3:30 at Culver City High School.
The boys’ baseball team is currently 5-4 and they have played some close games this season. “We are growing up fast,” said coach Devaugh Wallace after beating Morningside last Tuesday. “We are not the same team as last year. We are a brand-new team. We came into this season with very little varsity experience. I am very proud of this young team. They are working very hard, and they believe in what we are doing.”
Their next game is on the road against Inglewood on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Their next home game is against Inglewood at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 20.
Both the girls’ and boys’ lacrosse teams are currently 2-3. The girls play El Segundo at home on Monday at 3:30 p.m. and they stay at home to face Palisades on Wednesday, at 5 p.m. They travel to Santa Monica on Friday, March 21, to face the Vikings at 3:15 p.m.
The boys’ lacrosse team will travel to El Segundo on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and they have a home game against Santa Monica on Friday, March 21, at 5 p.m.
The 1-7 girls’ softball team will face Piedra Vista at home at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 14 and Leuzinger at home at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18.
