Four games into the MLS season, LAFC finds itself in an unexpected slump. After a 1-0 home loss to Austin FC last Saturday, Head Coach Steve Cherundolo’s squad has now dropped three straight matches across all competitions. While early-season struggles can sometimes be dismissed as minor hiccups, LAFC is determined to make adjustments before it becomes a real cause for concern.
The team that finished last season with the best record in the Western Conference looks far from its dominant self. Cherundolo acknowledged the challenges but remained measured in his assessment.
“If you are losing games because you are disorganized, then it really matters,” he said. “If you are losing games because of a little fatigue, but you know the solutions, then it’s not too concerning. This club has been built to win, and right now we have lost three in a row-that’s something we need to deal with.”
Fatigue has clearly played a role, but LAFC isn’t using it as an excuse. “Playing in multiple competitions is physically and mentally demanding. We like that-it’s not an excuse, but it’s very clear to see,” Cherundolo added.
Despite controlling 71% of possession against Austin FC, LAFC couldn’t break through. Austin FC goalkeeper Brad Stuver held firm, securing the shutout and handing LAFC its second straight league loss. The defeat drops them to eighth in the Western Conference with a 2-2 record which gives them a total of eight points.
Adding intrigue to the afternoon, former French internationals Paul Pogba and LAFC forward Olivier Giroud were spotted in attendance last Saturday, engaged in conversation. Giroud was ruled out of the match due to a leg injury, while Pogba, fresh off an 18-month doping ban, has been linked to an MLS move. His future, however, remains uncertain.
When asked about Pogba’s potential fit in MLS, Cherundolo was candid. “I have no idea what he’s been doing for a while,” he said. While Pogba’s presence at BMO Stadium fueled speculation, any move to LAFC or any MLS club would likely require a significant pay cut.
For now, LAFC’s focus remains on halting its early-season skid before falling further behind in a competitive Western Conference. With a much-needed break this week, they’ll aim to regroup before a road clash against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, March 22, at 5:30
