RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends that the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) (1) receive and file a report from the Latino Heritage Month Speaker Ad Hoc Subcommittee; (2) discuss and, if so desired, approve the report’s recommendations; and (3) determine next steps, as deemed necessary.

BACKGROUND

Latino Heritage Month begins September 15 and extends through October 15 each year. Latino Heritage Month is a 30-day commemoration that celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of “American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.”

The EHRAC previously held a Latino Heritage Month Celebration event on October 11, 2022, from 6 PM - 9 PM at the Culver City Senior Center, and on October 10, 2023, from 6 PM - 9 PM at the Culver City Teen Center. Both previous events highlighted student art, music, dancing, storytelling, and various other elements honoring the Latino Heritage.

At the April 23, 2024, Regular Meeting, EHRAC achieved consensus to receive and file a report from the Public Events and Budget Ad Hoc Subcommittee which contained a Latino Heritage Month Celebration in the form of a Latino Heritage Month Speaker. Original discussions suggested the Latino Heritage Month Speaker be incorporated with the Race Relations Event on September 17, 2024.

At the June 25, 2024, Special Meeting, EHRAC achieved consensus to add the Latino Heritage Month Speaker to the Biannual workplan.

At the July 23, 2024, Regular Meeting, EHRAC achieved consensus to move forward with the following:

1.                     Creating a Latino Heritage Month Speaker Event;

2.                     Creating a Latino Heritage Month Speaker Ad Hoc Subcommittee dedicated to coordinating the Latino Heritage Month Speaker Event;

3.                     Appointing Members Carlos Valverde, Haifaa Moammar, and Rebecca Rona-Tuttle thereto; and

4.                     To hear  a report from the Latino Heritage Month Speaker Ad Hoc Subcommittee at the August 27, 2024, Special Meeting.

At the August 27, 2024, Special Meeting, ERHAC received a report from the Latino Heritage Month Speaker Ad Hoc Subcommittee (Attachment 2). As a result of the report’s findings, EHRAC achieved consensus to move the event from September 17, 2024, to a later date in order to avoid conflicting with the CCHS College Fair, and to hear a report from the Latino Heritage Month Speaker Ad Hoc Subcommittee at the September 17, 2024, Special Meeting.
