A dozen downtown Culver City light poles display drawings and paintings by Culver City High School art students from old movies inspired by the theme “Glitz, Glamour, Glory, and Gold” for the Screenland 5K. Walkers and runners will pass the banners in the Oscar Sunday morning race on March 2.
Susana Fattorini’s Art and Culture students emulated motion picture artists meaningful to them or portrayed the City of Culver City within the context of movie-making.
“I learned about actors I had never heard of, and it also helped me learn more about my students. Many of them chose an artist from their culture, and you see a great diversity of choices,” said Fattorini, who inaugurated this annual project last year.
Fattorini said her students felt engaged. “Many came to my class between finals and after school during the week before winter break to complete their projects, using graphite, watercolor, acrylic, and markers,” said Fattorini.
Fattorini placed each project on the whiteboard for her other classes to admire.
“I watch their artistic development throughout the year, celebrating all the ‘wins’ and their growth,” she said.
Screenland 5K partners include the Culver City Rotary Foundation, Ivy Station, Sony Pictures Entertainment, City of Culver City, Culver City Arts Foundation, The Shay, Midwest Roofing, Culver City Toyota, West Basin Water District, Design Etcetera, Cavanaugh Realtors, Renewal by Anderson, Wende Museum, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Mercury Events.
