BACKGROUND
At the 01/272025 City Council meeting, Council members requested a report on five-year citywide collision statistics. In light up upcoming agenda items related to recent collisions and intersection safety concerns, Council remanded the report first to the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC) and then to the Mobility Subcommittee to discuss and provide input before forwarding to Council.
At a previous meeting, BPAC agendized a report from the Police Department on the traffic incidents at the intersections of Wesley St/National Blvd, Braddock Dr/Elenda St, and Washington Blvd/Higuera St.
BPAC also previously agendized a discussion regarding safety concerns at and around the intersection of Wesley St/National Blvd al and along National Blvd between Jefferson Blvd and Washington Blvd and what structural changes could be made to improve safety.
DISCUSSION
Police Department staff will report on five-year citywide pedestrian and bicycle collision statistics.

Police Department staff will also provide details regarding the recent traffic incidents at three city intersections.
• Traffic Incident #1 at intersection of Wesley St and National Blvd: 09/30/2024 at 1626 hours / Vehicle vs Pedestrian / Pedestrian Injuries: Death
• Traffic Incident #2 at intersection of Braddock Drive and Elenda Ave on 11/02/2024 at 0730 hours / Vehicle vs Pedestrian / Pedestrian Injuries: Broken leg, laceration to back of head
• Traffic Incident #3 at intersection of Washington Blvd and Higuera Street on 11/29/2024 at 1700 hours / Vehicle vs Motorcycle / Injuries: Death
BPAC members may ask questions and provide feedback regarding the collision statistics and specific traffic incidents.
Public Works staff will then provide information regarding what traffic management and/or safety measures have been implemented at the Wesley St and National Blvd intersection since the incident in September 2024.
BPAC members will open a discussion regarding safety concerns at the intersection of Wesley St and National Blvd and along National Blvd between Jefferson Blvd and Washington Blvd and potential improvements to improve safety.
Public Works staff will also discuss with BPAC members staff’s approach to proactive traffic safety and analysis citywide.
FISCAL IMPACT
Any recommended improvements in or around the Wesley St and National Blvd intersection will have fiscal impacts to be determined.
