RECOMMENDATION

 

Staff recommends that the Equity and Human Relations Advisory Committee (EHRAC) (1) Have a discussion centered on the future direction of Latino Heritage Month Celebrations; and (2) if deemed appropriate, determine next steps.

 

 

BACKGROUND/DISCUSSION

 

Latino Heritage Month begins September 15 and extends through October 15 each year. Latino Heritage Month is a 30-day commemoration that celebrates the history, culture, and contributions of “American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.”

 

Beginning in October 2022, EHRAC has held a Latino Heritage Month Celebration annually on the following dates:

                     October 11, 2022, from 6 PM - 9 PM at the Culver City Senior Center, and on

                     October 10, 2023, from 6 PM - 9 PM at the Culver City Teen Center

                     October 22, 2024, from 8 PM - 9 PM in conjunction with EHRAC’s Race Relations Community Conversation at the Veterans Memorial Building.

 

Events highlighted student art, writing, music, folklorico, storytelling, and various other elements honoring the Latino Heritage.

 

At the February 25, 2025, Special Meeting, in requests from members for future items to agendize, Member Valverde raised a discussion of the future direction of Latino Heritage Month celebrations. EHRAC reached agreement to discuss the item at the EHRAC April 22, 2025, Regular Meeting.
