RECOMMENDATION

Staff recommends the City Council (1) award a construction contract to CJ Concrete Construction, Inc. as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder, in the amount of $289,366.00 for the Sidewalk, Curb Ramp, and Driveway Approach Improvement Project, PZ-428; and (2) authorize the Public Works Director to approve change orders to the contract in an amount not-to-exceed $72,341.00 to cover contingency costs (25%).

BACKGROUND

The City receives maintenance requests from the public for areas such as broken and uplifted concrete sidewalks, curb ramps, driveway approaches and street sections. Public Works Department compiles resident requests and investigates them to assess the damage and potential hazard to pedestrians.  Besides the ongoing repairs that have been completed by Public Works Maintenance and Operations Staff, Engineering Division regularly manages projects that can address many locations at once, prioritizing locations based on severity, budget constraints and previous maintenance measures.

Since the sidewalk uplift is mainly attributed to parkway tree root intrusion, tree root trimming is also part of the scope.  The City Arborist will provide guidance throughout the duration of the project.
